·         THE END

How Mr Escalante and Mr. Keating are different and/or Similar

Mr. Escalante taught at Garfield High School in “Stand and Deliver” the kids were poor and angry. He seemed to not be phased by the violence and things he had to deal with on a regular basis. His house was in the same poor town as the school. So by these facts I can assume that Mr. Escalante had a similar upbringing. This may be why he wanted to help the students in the first place. Mr. Keating In “Dead Poets Society” had gone to Welton Academy when he was a kid, so he knows the way the school works and the manner of the other teachers there. So he understands the other students and what frustrations they might have and can relate to them. So both of the teachers grew up the same way the students they are teaching are growing up now. But the way each of them grew up was very different. Both of the teachers are looked at as different by the other teachers for their teaching style. Mr. Escalante and Mr. Keating both go a little overboard with their teaching methods. One could say that some of the things they say and do are a little inappropriate and it’s not something you would normally see another teacher at their school do. Mr. Escalante will say things like “I’m going to break your neck like a toothpick if you don’t answer this question” and Mr. Keating has a kid who didn’t do his assignment go up to the front of the class and describe a picture of a man with his eyes closed until he gets the student to open up and not be afraid to tap into his “inner poet;” and have them rip sections he doesn’t like out of their books. All in all, both of the teachers have some differences, but at the end of the day they are both teachers that care about their students with nothing but good intentions for them and that makes them even more the same.

How the schools from "Stand and Deliver" and "Dead Poets Society" Differ

The school in “Stand and Deliver” and the school in “Dead Poets Society” differ in many ways.  Garfield High school from stand and deliver is a poor school with students that don’t really care about their grades or their futures. When Mr. Escalante initially went to the school to teach he was supposed to be teaching a computer class but they didn’t have enough money for computers. So he taught math instead. When Mr. Escalante wanted to push the kids and see what they were capable of the other teachers had no faith in what he wanted for the students and did not plan on them succeeding. In fact when they did succeed the school board did not believe them, since they were such a poor school with no history of proving what they were capable of. Now at Welton Academy in “Stand and Deliver” the school board would never doubt the student’s success. The kids all have opportunities and teachers that believe in them and expect nothing but the best. The students maintain good grades; and listen to their teacher and elders. The school is very nice and the “privileged kids” go there since it is one of the best schools in the country. Both of the schools differ very much but, in the way they kids are alone in stand and deliver because they have few people in their lives that believe in them. The students and Welton are alone in the sense that they are not able to have their own opinion on what they want to do with their life. They just have to do as their told and study their math, English, science etc. So one school has more money than the other and is highly recommended but the kids still need to be able to experience joys in life that they choose to do themselves.

Dead Poets Society Notes Part 1

                              Dead Poets Society Notes

·         100 years ago 1889 the school Helton Opened.

·         The best Christian school in the U.S.

·         Replacement teacher Mr. John Keating

·         Group of kids smoke in dorm and talk about doing their study group.

·         Kids father makes him drop annual.

·         Trigonometry homework not done penalizes one point off their final grade, teachers are very strict.

·         Mr. Keating attended Helton

·         Uses a little humor to poke fun at the kids

·         Mr. Keating has the kids look at the past kids of the school and told them they are no different than they are. They think they are destined for great things, But just like them one day they will die. So they should seize the day. Carpe diem

·         Kids say he is different and spooky at first.

·         Knox visits the Danbury's. His family knows them.

·         Mr. Keating makes the kids rip a page out of the book along with the entire introduction. They are hesitant.

·         Mr. McAlister walks in and says “what the hell is going on” and the teacher instructs them to keep ripping it out. He wants them to think for themselves.

·         He has them huddle up and says “we read and write poetry because we are members of the human race that is full of passion” life goes on and you contribute a verse, what will your verse be?"

·         Mr. Keating says the students are free thinkers, and another teacher thinks otherwise

·         When Mr. Keating was a student he was part of a dead poet’s society, they met up and took turns reading poetry together. Something he said the school wouldn’t be fond of.

·         Some of the guys want to go and try reading poetry. Some of them are hesitant though.

·         A student found the book they used to read at their DPS meetings and takes it.

·         They all take turns reading poetry with the book they took from their teacher.

·         Mr. Keating stands on a desk to show the kids to look at the world in a different way, and makes the kids stand on their desks too.

·         Mr. Keating has them write a poem of their own along with an essay and they need to read their poem to the whole class. He knows one of the boys is scared to read in front of other people.

·         Neil wants to be in a play when he knows his dad doesn’t want him to. He wants to seize the day. His friend doesn’t think it’s a good idea, but he wants to enjoy the thought of doing something he enjoys.

·         Mr. Keating says to be in the DPS group they have to do something to seize the day.

·         Mr. Keating has the boys read a line of poetry out loud and kick a ball afterwards out in a field. And plays music while they do it.

·         Neil gets the part in the play he wanted, and he needs a letter of permission from his father and a teacher, so he writes a fake note.

·         He has the boy who laughed at another boy for reading his poetry go next for laughing at someone else.

·         Mr. Anderson didn’t write a poem and Mr. K said he thinks he does have interesting stuff to write about. He makes him yelp in front of the class.

·         Mr. Keating makes him look at a picture of a man and describe the man and the kid finally has a breakthrough.

·         He has the kids walking and chanting, showing them that they have their own walk and their own pace and direction that they should walk. They shouldn’t just walk with everyone else, take the path least traveled.

·         One boy decides to seize the day and call a girl he has liked to go out with her.

·         Most of the boys are opening up and speaking their mind more, they were taught to just do as their told and not to speak up.

Comapring Mr. McFarland and Mr. Escalante

Mr. McFarland in Mike Roses' “I Just Wanna be Average" and Mr. Escalante in “Stand and Deliver” are very similar. They both push the kids to use their mind more than they have in a long time. In both the movie and the Blog, the students know how hard the teachers work for them and they both definitely gain the students respect. Both of the teachers also opened up their homes to the students for dinner and/or studying. The teachers are also both gave the students a hefty work load as is stated by Mike Rose; “within no time, he had us so startled with work that we didn't much worry about where he slept or if he slept at all. We wrote three or four essays a month. We read a book every two to three weeks.” In stand and deliver Mr. Escalante had them coming into class early and staying late every day including working through school holidays. Both teachers wanted to the students to realize how much they could accomplish and wanted to challenge them into believing in themselves. Overall they were both excellent teachers that changed the lives of their students by believing in them and being there for them.

Stand and Deliver Group Notes part 2

Mr. Escalante shows his dedication to teaching his class when he continues to show up to class when he was supposed to be in the hospital because he had a heart attack from being overworked

He kicked Angel out of class for being late until Angel went to his house with his sick grandmother to explain why he was late

He makes a mistake and one of his students gets mad and leaves but he follows her in the hall and makes up for it

His students present Jaime with a plaque for his teaching and fix up and repaint his car

The students get angry when their scores are questioned which shows that they care about the class as a result of Jaime’s teaching

Because everyone was doubting their success he worries that the students “will lose their confidence in the system which they’re finally qualified for”

Jaime goes to the school board outraged about what happened with his student’s scores and accuses them of discrimination and tells one of them that “If I ever see you on the street, I’ll kick the shit out of you”

After the students decide to retake the test he makes sure to boost their confidence and spends the whole day preparing with them and even takes them to his house and continues studying while making them dinner

His family tells him that they never see him because he’s too dedicated and sacrifices too much for his calculus students.

Because of Mr. Escalante’s dedication the school’s students continued taking calculus for the following years and more passed every consecutive year

Stand and Deliver Notes part 2

  ·         He pushes the kids by having them stay even later while they long to enjoy their     senior year.

·         He uses the kids personal life as humor and pushes one girl to leave, then chases her down to see what is really wrong. She is having family and boyfriend problems. He comforts her by listening and giving her a hug.

·         Angel takes his sick grandma to the hospital and is late to class, so Mr. Escalante kicks him out of class without listening to what he has to say.

·         He pushes poncho who thinks he is the dumbest in the class and he has a little meltdown.

·         He works 60 hours a week and teaches school through the school breaks for free.

·         Angel comes to Mr. Escalante house with his grandma to tell him that she was sick.

·         Teaches adult evening school at night to teach them English.

·         Mr. Escalante has a hard attack during a night class and does not show up to class and the kids start a fight.

·         The kids gets a sub while Mr. Escalante is out because of his hard attack

·         The sub doesn’t know how to teach calculus because he is a music teacher.

·         His doctor says he needs to take a month off.

·         She he sneaks out of the hospital and just shows up to his calculus class.

·         Kids take advanced placement calculus test

·         No other school in southern California had more students do so well on the test

·         All the students passed the test

·         Kids present a plaque to Mr. Escalante

·         The board doubts the kids success because they had all the same wrong answers and they say them doing so good is such an unusual circumstances.

·         Angel goes back to his old ways and gets pulled over with a warning for his disrespectful mouth.

·         His old friend starts pushing him around then he leaves.

·         The board meets with the kids to try and get them to admit they cheated.

·         Angel tells them he got the test ahead of time from his dad who he killed. As a joke. Then the board left.

·         Mr. Escalante gets a letter to resignation from the school.

·         He then gets his car stolen and walks home.

·         He thinks he made a mistake of trying to teach them calculus.

·         He is worried that they are losing the confidence in the school system they are trying to be a part of.

·         The kids took his car and fixed it up for him.

·         He goes to the board to see why they think the kids cheated.

·         He wants to see the test to see the mistakes they made. To see for himself if they really cheated or not.

·         The board gave them statistics of how good they did which is why they think  they cheated

·         The board suggests that they retake the test.

·         The scores were questioned because of where the kids live and because they are Hispanic.

·         He yells at the board and tells them they are racist and that if he saw them on the street he would “kick the shit out of him”

·         The kids retake the test and have one day to study.

·         He tells the kids not to bring anything with them and not to have too many pockets and to not wander their eyes. Not to give them any excuses. Tells them how wonderful they are.

·         He makes dinner for the kids and has them at his house to study and Pablo leaves.

·         Kids retake test and are very tired.

·         Ana has to leave early and not finish her test because she has an appointment about her scholarship, but still passed.

·         The kids all passed the retake as well.

·         As the years went on more and more students passed the test.

Stand and deliver Notes Part 1

  • He goes to teach computer science and the school has no funding for computers, so he teaches Math 1A
  • The class is over sized, some kids have to stand.
  • They don't listen to him, just chat with each other.
  • He comes to class with an apron on and cuts an apple in half with a knife to show fractions of the apple
  • He gets the classes attention with his good sense of humor
  • forcefully stops a student from running into a fight.
  • He teaches his students algebra instead of math
  • students will rise to the level of expectations he states.
  • He just asks for the desire to learn
  • He gives a kid extra books so nobody sees him walking around with them and so the kid will go to class.
  • kids tried to protest taking the quiz and homework, she had to sit in a chair in front of the class until she took the quiz.
  • He talks to a students father about her staying in school. she wants medical school and her dad wants her to quit school and work at his restaurant. He ends up letting her go back to school.
  • He wants to teach calculus. The teachers all fight him on it. He has the kids take summer school so they are ready next year to learn calculus.
  • the other teachers don't believe in the kids
  • His calculus class starts an hour before school and goes until five and they have to come on Saturdays.
  • parents have to sign a waiver approving the above
  • He uses terms that may be "inappropriate" for class to get the students attention.

Group notes Stand and Deliver part 1

One of the important things Mr. Escalante did was make sure the class respected him. At the start they did not respect him at all but he got their attention and made them listen to and respect him.
He got in the faces of his students and forced them to learn, and embarrassed them when they wouldn’t learn, making inappropriate remarks and even threats. He did what he had to do with the type of students he had to teach.
He made an effort to understand what was happening in the lives of his students and tried to help them personally.
He did a good job at keeping the class interested and making sure to get them to pay attention.
He’s the only teacher in the school that actually believes in the students and wants them to succeed and will go to any lengths to make sure they understand.
An example of his different teaching style, he was trying to get a student named Angel to answer a question, and had to intimidate and embarrass him in front of the class by telling him not to look like a loser in front of the class and that he’d snap his neck like a toothpick if he didn’t answer. This method was successful and boosted his confidence in the class.
During conferences between teachers he speaks his mind even when it offends or angers other teachers, such as when he wants to teach the students calculus and how he needed to hold a summer class to prepare them. The other teachers didn’t believe in him or the students and don’t want him to waste his time on them.
He shows up to a restaurant owned by the family of his student Ana Delgado to understand her life and why she was going to drop out of school. He told her father that she’s the top student in the class and that she wants to go to medical school, and convinced him to let her stay in the class.

Ideas for Comparing my Teachers

Growing up I really don't remember any bad teachers I had. There may be some qualities I didn't like but nothing significant enough for me to remember. I try to remember happy things in my life so I will probably be comparing two good teachers that I had. The first teacher I remember was my fifth grade teacher. She always had a smile on her face and I could laugh with. I remember not wanting to be in her class for some silly reason that I cant even remember. But she was so nice, so that didn't last long. Of coarse being in the fifth grade I probably didn't know what really made a good teacher and her being fun was what attracted  me at the time. Whatever made me like her made it all bearable to get through all the school subjects we needed to. I had fun with her so I had fun learning science and math too! The other teacher I liked was a high school teacher. She taught food science, interior design and other classes I cant even remember. I knew I liked her and took as many of her classes as I could in school. She was a very confident sure of herself person. And I looked up to that. I knew she wanted me to succeed and I would go into her class to do homework and people ate lunch in her class too. It was a comfortable place for me to be with all the "challenges" of high school.

Audre Lorde essay

Audre Lorde's essay talks about the teachers she encountered. After her mom taught her how to read and write she started school in a small class of kindergarteners. Her teacher seemed neither nice nor mean to me at first. Audre reports that she says;  "Now just try, dear. I'm sure you can try to print your A. Mother will be so pleased to see that at least you tried." Then she patted her head afterwards, so at least she was trying to be encouraging. After she writes her name instead of copying a letter Audrey states All of a sudden the air around her hand beside my notebook grew very still and frightening. She also refers to how She broke the silence with a wicked edge to her voice. "I see." she said. "I see we have a young lady who does not want to do as she is told. We will have to tell her mother about that."
After she switched schools to the first grade and her new teacher was Sister Mary that is described as a “disciplinarian who helped run the first grade with an iron hand in the shape of a cross.” Audre also states that “it always felt like Sister MPH hated either teaching or little children.” She also turned in an assignment that she did well on so Sister Mary assumed she was cheating. She had to bring in a note from her dad stating that she did not cheat. So she obviously didn’t trust in her abilities as a student.

Happiness is Homemade Final Draft

The most important thing I have learned is that I must not always please other people but I need to please myself. (Of course this is an ongoing life lesson) My family is very out spoken, so they are not afraid to tell me what they think I should do, or should not do. I am the youngest of four girls, and of course being the youngest I looked up to my older sisters and cared so much about their opinion of me. They had always "bossed me around" and I was just so used to it. Following my mom’s lead I would have to call my family realists. It is a good quality that people should have I admit, but sometimes they only see one way and get “tunnel vision” as I call it and don’t always see anyone else’s way. For example, towards the end of high school I wanted to be a teacher, I have always wanted a job where I could personally and positively impact the lives of others. I have had some really great teachers that I looked up to and helped me believe in myself. I had explained to my mom why I wanted to do this, but all she saw was the salary of teachers and the budget cuts going on at different schools. Of course being me I respected her opinion but was also frustrated because I didn’t know what to do. As a result I got a job as a server and just lived day to day with no plan for the future. Both of my parents work at the Shipyard and told me they are hiring and could get me a job. I explained to them I did not want to work there, and wanted something different for myself.

As the economy took a dive, so did my tips as a waitress. Reality did set in that I needed a job with consistent hours and a paycheck I knew was coming.  So, in desperation I accepted getting a job in the shipyard but I told myself that it would just be a stepping stone to something better in my life. I was scared and excited starting at the shipyard. Being positive, I thought wow this is a place where people make good money to support their families with benefits and retirement. I thought “real mature adults” work here not just young adults bouncing around to different jobs.  I won’t forget the guy who showed us new hires around for a week before we were placed on a project. We were walking around the shipyard looking at everyone working with their hardhats on (I would be ok never having to wear a hardhat again!) and he said “these people make some of the best money in Kitsap county, they walk around pissed off all day, and I’ll never understand it.” I should have told my mom about that “reality."

After the first year in the shipyard I got the hang of what I was supposed to do as a Rigger. We moved anything and everything for other shops while working on aircraft carriers and submarines. It is actually one of the more manly jobs in there. Almost every day was a battle being a woman working around all of those men. They always reminded you that you’re a woman that cannot contribute as much as a man can. The real battle was not letting it get to you, and not showing them that you care at all. If they see that something bothers you they will bring it up constantly. It seemed things would be best to just keep to myself and work as hard as I could. Unfortunately I am a social, people person and keeping to myself made me very unhappy. Don’t get me wrong there were some very good guys that I met and became friends with while working there, but unfortunately the bad was definitely outweighing the good.

This was what I did at the shipyard, rain or shine!

At one point I looked into AmeriCorps, an opportunity to do some good in this world while figuring out what I wanted to do. I had filled everything out including references and letters of recommendation. I called my mom and told her I wanted to quit the shipyard and join them. She told me it was not a good idea and she did not support me. I don't however like to dwell on the past so I know now I wouldn't have met my husband in the shipyard if I had left that early. Therefore I stayed and told myself I could just find a different job within the shipyard that could possibly make me happy. I thought this is a stable job that has benefits for my future family. So I should just stick it out. I told myself “not everyone likes their job.” I should know I heard people complain on a regular basis about their jobs. Then there were rumors going around that helper employees would be laid off for months because of a budget cut. Instead of being upset and freaking out I found that the thought of not working there made me happy. After it was all said and done they didn't end up laying anyone but two people off.

Something had clicked inside of me and it was obvious what I needed to do. I just thought if I hate working here and want to go home at night to complain about this place; ultimately I will look back in ten years and regret staying. Every morning that I woke up and went to work then came home was just me going through the motions; I didn’t care or have any passion for what I was doing. Having no passion about what I’m doing is not living my life, and a waste of my time. This is my life and I am the only one that can control what I do and what I don't do. I cant blame my mom or my family or whoever is in my life at the time. So at the end of the day, regardless of what I do or don't do, I have to realize that it is in my control. Finally for the first time it felt good not caring about what anyone else thought or said. I knew in my heart I was doing what was right for me.
I am now going to college and doing my prerequisites for Physical Therapy Assistant. I may change my mind but that's alright as long as I'm happy doing it!

All pictures shown in this paper were found on Google images.

This music video "Roar by Katy Perry" was found on YouTube.
It motivates me and reminds me that I have to fight for what I want to do in life.

What makes a good teacher

I think a good teacher recognizes every students strengths. (if they are given the opportunity) They should be a good happy and positive role model for the kids and lets them explore their creativity so they can get to know their strengths and the things they love. I have honestly forgotten the things I used to love as a kid. If their is a student who seems lost or not interested. I think its important to figure out why they are lost or not interested and see if the child can find their inner spark. Just showing someone that you care and what they feel and what they want to do is important; that is huge and can help open them up to maybe find things out that they didn't know about themselves.
After reading Marie F Hassett's What makes a good teacher I still have the same opinion but it did make me think of what I liked about the teachers that I most enjoyed growing up. I remember them being warm and excited about what they were teaching. Which made me want to learn about it and made it fun for me. They did get to know me and let me know that they cared about my success as a student. And I feeling like they were on my side gave me a self esteem boost that I needed.

Notes from Robinsons video:

Nobody has a clue of the future so how do we know what to teach?

Creativity is as important as literacy

Kids take a chance, if they don’t know they’ll go. By the time their adults they become afraid of taking chances. They are afraid of making mistakes.

If we don’t grow into creativity we grow out of it.

Arts are on the bottom of education everywhere on earth.

University professors are what the education system breed.

Kids are not encouraged to become an artist or musicians, because they say they will not get a job doing it.

Education needs to be diverse and dynamic.
