Comapring Mr. McFarland and Mr. Escalante
Mr. McFarland in Mike Roses' “I Just Wanna be Average" and Mr. Escalante in “Stand and Deliver” are very similar. They both push the kids to use their mind more than they have in a long time. In both the movie and the Blog, the students know how hard the teachers work for them and they both definitely gain the students respect. Both of the teachers also opened up their homes to the students for dinner and/or studying. The teachers are also both gave the students a hefty work load as is stated by Mike Rose; “within no time, he had us so startled with work that we didn't much worry about where he slept or if he slept at all. We wrote three or four essays a month. We read a book every two to three weeks.” In stand and deliver Mr. Escalante had them coming into class early and staying late every day including working through school holidays. Both teachers wanted to the students to realize how much they could accomplish and wanted to challenge them into believing in themselves. Overall they were both excellent teachers that changed the lives of their students by believing in them and being there for them.
