He uses the kids personal life as
humor and pushes one girl to leave, then chases her down to see what is really
wrong. She is having family and boyfriend problems. He comforts her by
listening and giving her a hug.

Angel takes his sick grandma to the
hospital and is late to class, so Mr. Escalante kicks him out of class without
listening to what he has to say.
·
He pushes poncho who thinks he is the
dumbest in the class and he has a little meltdown.
·
He works 60 hours a week and teaches school
through the school breaks for free.
·
Angel comes to Mr. Escalante house with
his grandma to tell him that she was sick.
·
Teaches
adult evening school at night to teach them English.
·
Mr.
Escalante has a hard attack during a night class and does not show up to class
and the kids start a fight.
·
The
kids gets a sub while Mr. Escalante is out because of his hard attack
·
The
sub doesn’t know how to teach calculus because he is a music teacher.
·
His
doctor says he needs to take a month off.
·
She
he sneaks out of the hospital and just shows up to his calculus class.
·
Kids
take advanced placement calculus test
·
No
other school in southern California had more students do so well on the test
·
All
the students passed the test
·
Kids
present a plaque to Mr. Escalante
·
The
board doubts the kids success because they had all the same wrong answers and
they say them doing so good is such an unusual circumstances.
·
Angel
goes back to his old ways and gets pulled over with a warning for his
disrespectful mouth.
·
His
old friend starts pushing him around then he leaves.
·
The
board meets with the kids to try and get them to admit they cheated.
·
Angel
tells them he got the test ahead of time from his dad who he killed. As a joke.
Then the board left.
·
Mr.
Escalante gets a letter to resignation from the school.
·
He
then gets his car stolen and walks home.
·
He
thinks he made a mistake of trying to teach them calculus.
·
He
is worried that they are losing the confidence in the school system they are
trying to be a part of.
·
The
kids took his car and fixed it up for him.
·
He
goes to the board to see why they think the kids cheated.
·
He
wants to see the test to see the mistakes they made. To see for himself if they
really cheated or not.
·
The
board gave them statistics of how good they did which is why they think they cheated
·
The
board suggests that they retake the test.
·
The
scores were questioned because of where the kids live and because they are Hispanic.
·
He
yells at the board and tells them they are racist and that if he saw them on
the street he would “kick the shit out of him”
·
The
kids retake the test and have one day to study.
·
He
tells the kids not to bring anything with them and not to have too many pockets
and to not wander their eyes. Not to give them any excuses. Tells them how
wonderful they are.
·
He
makes dinner for the kids and has them at his house to study and Pablo leaves.
·
Kids
retake test and are very tired.
·
Ana
has to leave early and not finish her test because she has an appointment about
her scholarship, but still passed.
·
The
kids all passed the retake as well.
·
As
the years went on more and more students passed the test.
